Physical Education

At KS5 students are able to study BTEC Sport Single and Double awards.

In Core Physical Education, we study the following:

  • A wide variety of team and Individual sports.
  • Understanding how physical activity is of benefit to and contributes to a healthy active lifestyle.
  • Learning how to monitor fitness levels and what to do in order to improve fitness levels.
  • Applying a wide variety of individual skills specific to a range of specific sports.
  • Developing work as a team to both defend and attack in a variety of different sports.
  • Evaluating and improving performance.
  • Developing tactics and compositional ideas.

Assessment

  • Students are assessed continually in the following areas:
    • Analysing Performance
    • Creativity
    • Fitness
    • Leadership
    • Maximising Opportunities
    • Mind Set + Character
    • Tactics + Strategies
  • Each Module/Sport is also assessed
  • Peer assessment and verbal feedback is given throughout lessons

Learning beyond the classroom

  • We have many opportunities to attend extra-curricular practices, including both performance based and recreational clubs
  • We have the opportunity to represent the school in a wide range of sports
  • Those who regularly attend practices will have the opportunity to represent the school at an appropriate standard
  • Many students have achieved area (Hambleton + Richmondshire) and county (North Yorkshire) representative honours as a result of representing the school.Every member of PE staff teaches KS3 PE in some capacity

In KS4 Physical Education we study the following

PE GCSE

The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. It will give you exciting opportunities to be involved in a number of different physical activities, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. You should have an interest in physical education and sport, enjoy being active and appreciate the benefits of keeping fit and healthy.

You will:

  • develop your knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activities
  • examine the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance
  • find ways to improve your own performances in a variety of roles
  • identify ways to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in physical activity
  • appreciate the benefits of promoting ‘sport for all’.
Course TitleGGCSE Physical Education
OverviewThis is a GCSE Qualification. 40% of the course is coursework based. This includes your practical performance in three different areas and the completion of a personal exercise programme. 60% of the course is assessed through examination. There are 2 exams: Fitness and Body Systems – 1hr 45mins and Health and Performance – 1 hr 15mins
LimitationsThis course is open to all students, however an interest in sport is essential and students who are regular attendees to extra-curricular practices are well suited.
Most suitable forAll students with a strong interest in sport who are keen to improve their sporting performance, as well as develop their knowledge of the contributing factors to a healthy active lifestyle.

  • Home learning will be regularly set for students to complete
  • Students are expected to re-cap and consolidate their knowledge outside of the classroom
  • Participating regularly in their chosen activity is an essential part of the course, and opportunities for this will be available in the schools extra-curricular programme and local sports clubs.
